With the name CUB, "Consumers United for Buying," it was clear from the beginning that CUB® had a fresh outlook on grocery retailing. Founded by Minnesota-based Hooley’s Supermarkets, CUB was one of the first total discount food stores in the United States.
CUB joined SUPERVALU® in 1980 with five stores in the Twin Cities area. Today there are 78 stores in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
CUB shoppers enjoy low prices on a variety of top-quality name-brand products and the freshest produce, meats, seafood and baked goods available. For total convenience, most CUB stores are open 24 hours a day and offer more than 35,000 items, full-service pharmacies and in-store banking.
In the Community
During the 2004 Holiday season, CUB and its customers helped the Salvation Army raise more than $740,000 — and supplied volunteers with fresh baked goods each and every day. The amount raised was a nearly 100 percent increase over 2003 totals, enabling the Salvation Army to provide social services to even more individuals and families throughout the region.
During September 2004, CUB shoppers "rounded up" their receipt totals to help benefit Second Harvest Heartland Food Bank. CUB added another $50,000 for a grand total of over $140,000.
The Caring Tree's mission is to promote educational success for Minnesota's K-12 students in need by ensuring that they have the appropriate school supplies.
In partnership with CUB, The Caring Tree's annual campaign collects new back-to-school supplies for K-12 low-income students throughout the state of Minnesota. Since 2001, CUB and its customers have assisted more than 9,000 Minnesota students with new back-to-school supplies.
