The formation of Farm Fresh Food & Pharmacy in 1957 was a result of people working together to develop a neighborhood grocery store. From the very beginning, community involvement has been an important part of Farm Fresh. The name "Farm Fresh" was selected from entries submitted by residents of the area surrounding the first store.
In 1986, Farm Fresh merged with Giant Open Air Markets and made local history by combining the area's two finest supermarkets. In March of 1998, Farm Fresh was purchased by Richfood Holdings, Inc., and in August of 1999, SUPERVALU purchased Richfood and all of its subsidiaries, including Farm Fresh. Today, Farm Fresh operates 42 grocery stores, all located in Richmond and the Hampton Roads areas of Virginia and in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. In addition, Farm Fresh operates a free standing pharmacy at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia.
Farm Fresh is recognized as the premier grocer in the Hampton Roads area. Annual Reader's Choice polls consistently name Farm Fresh as the Best Grocery Store. Farm Fresh prides itself on having clean stores, competitively-priced products, a large selection of quality national and regional brand products and one-stop shopping services.
In the Community
Each June, Farm Fresh hosts its annual Farm Fresh Charity Golf Classic, a two-day event recognized as one of the largest charity tournaments on the East Coast with more than 500 golfers participating. This fundraising event raises more than $200,000 for the Farm Fresh Charitable Foundation in support of local non-profit community groups, schools and food banks.
